FMCSA Rule Change Allows Gravity-Fed Fuel Systems on Trucks
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says a recent rule change already permits gravity-fed and siphon-fed fuel systems on commercial vehicles. Companies no longer need to apply for special exemptions for this equipment.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration withdrew a notice about a fuel system exemption request. The request came from Charles Machine Works, Inc.
The company wanted to renew a five-year exemption. The exemption would allow gravity-fed or siphon-fed fuel systems on commercial motor vehicles.
FMCSA says a final rule from February 19, 2026, already provides this relief. The rule amended the relevant regulation.
The agency determined the amendment resolves the concerns in the original request. The exemption is now unnecessary for Charles Machine Works, Inc.
It is also unnecessary for any other companies that might have planned to request an exemption. The rule change covers the prohibition on these fuel systems.
